Hit a problem PC recently that was destined to be wiped and reinstalled. After a couple of days trying to fix it I was rapidly running out of options.
When trying to boot, it would Blue Screen with CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED.
I tried running an offline system restore from the WinPE environment, but this failed with:
An unspecified error occurred during System Restore. (0X8007002)
Lots of googling suggested the following – go into c:\windows\system32\config and rename two files:
ren SYSTEM SYSTEM.001
ren SOFTWARE SOFTWARE.001
I had nothing to lose so gave it a try! The system restore completed and the system booted!!
